Miehen tiloissa – Male Spaces

Miehen tiloissa translates roughly as Male Spaces. It is a voice-theatre piece which was directed by Juha Valkeapää. We worked on it in November 2006 with a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. We wanted to deal with the idea of "maleness" in a non-verbal manner. Improvisation is a vital part of the piece, but also the polyphonic traditions which form the basis of our group's experience.
The performance was featured on the K–Rappu programme on Finnish Television in November 2006 and we then performed the piece at Muu Gallery in Helsinki. However this was just the first outing of Male Spaces and we have since performed it in various venues around Finland, culminating in a tour in november 2008.
A shrewd observer may well note that the photo montage we came up with for Miehen tiloissa was to form the basis of the front cover of the CD with traditional polyphonic material we released in 2008, Jet-Black.
